What is a Portfolio Career: The standard, most acceptable career is to have one job at one organisation. However, nowadays, a new phenomenon called a “Portfolio Career” is gaining in popularity. This involves having multiple careers at the same time and having the flexibility to design your own working life.
The pandemic helped to get people to start thinking about different ways of working. Especially because people generally had a bit more time on their hands to think about what they really want to spend their time doing.
What are the benefits of a Portfolio Career?
- Variety in the type of work you do and you get to choose the work that you do.
- You get to showcase the many sides of your personality. For example, you can be both practical and creative.
- Not putting all your eggs in one basket. This means that you have other sources of income to rely on if you are made redundant or put on furlough.

- Write a book and self publish on Amazon
- Sell jewellery on Etsy
- Start a YouTube Channel
- Host Workshops e.g. Christmas crafts, cooking, chocolate making, millinery, candle making, wine tasting, jewellery making. The possibilities are endless.

- Social Media Manager
- FB Advert Manager
- Temping
- Contracting
- Web designer
- Content Writer

When I worked in my full time “proper” job in financial services I was also doing the following:

There are lots of portfolio career options out there. I encourage you to give something a go. The great thing about a portfolio career is that you get the opportunity to try things out and see what works for you. Then you can create a career that encompasses all the things you want to do and none of the things you don’t want to do. You get to design your own career.
