Nobody can make you happy until you’re happy with yourself first

Happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.

In the book, The How of Happiness, Sonja Lyubomirsky concludes that 50 percent of a human’s happiness level is determined by genetics, 10 percent is affected by life circumstances and situation, and the remaining 40 percent of happiness is subject to self-control. What can you do to increase your happiness levels?

Top Tips for Making Yourself Happier

Exercise more: When we exercise, the body releases endorphins that make us happy. No one ever says at the end of a gym session that they really regret going to the gym. The problem is motivating yourself to leave your house in the first place.

Millie Mackintosh wears her gym clothes to complete her day to day tasks, she says that it encourages her to make better decisions when it comes to food and always keeps exercise and healthy living on her mind.

According to the New York Times just  7 minutes of exercise could be enough to make you happy. Therefore, if you think you don’t have time for it, then maybe you do! Plus, it can help you to relax, increase your brain power and improve your body image.

Sleep more: Happiness and a good nights sleep go hand in hand. Humans need to sleep in order to live and function. The average person needs between 6 to 8 hours sleep. An exhausted person is not a happy person!

Spend time with your friends and family: One of the biggest regrets of the dying is that they wish they had spent less time working and more time with their loved ones. Don’t let this be one of your regrets. Make time for other people and enjoy your social interactions.

Help others: Helping others is not only good for them and a good thing to do, it also makes us happier and healthier. Giving also connects us to others, helping to build a happier society for everyone. This is not just about money, we can also give our time, energy and ideas. Therefore, if you want to feel happier, do something for someone else. Check out my blog on random acts of kindness.

Our happiness is greatest when we contribute most to the happiness of others

Smiling: Your smile is a powerful tool. Most people think that we smile because we feel happy, but it can also go the other way, we feel happy because we smile.

Smiling can improve your mood and reduce stress. A study from Penn State University found that people who smile appear to be more likeable, courteous and competent. Smiling is also contagious, if you smile other people smile. Why don’t you try it now?

A smile is happiness you will find right under your nose
