The Secret to Living is Giving

My husband and I were talking about what we would do if we won the lottery. I said that I would love to select amazing charities from around the world and support them in their visions and goals. As I reflected on this thought over the following few days, I thought that I can already do that but on a smaller scale. This would involve selecting charities that I believe in and then donating money or time towards them. My quest then began to find charities to support.

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give

Feeding America

The title of this blog post is actually from one of the world’s most inspirational speakers, Tony Robbins. In December 2014, Tony joined forces with the Hunger-Relief charity to launch the 100 million meals challenge. Tony invited the public to help match his personal gift of 50 million meals to Feeding America. When combined with Tony’s gift, every $1 given to Feeding America helps to secure and distribute 20 meals.

The idea for this challenge started from Tony’s childhood when food was a concern. Every year from his late teenage years on an ongoing basis Tony would go round homes providing food to less fortunate. My small donation will help those facing hunger this year. Mary’s Meals

The second charity that struck a chord with me was Mary’s Meals. Mary’s Meals provides one good meal to some of the world’s poorest children every school day. They encourage children who may otherwise be forced to work or beg to come to school and they will each get a meal. It costs £12.20 to feed a child for a whole school year. The charity is now feeding 1,035,637 children in 12 countries around the world.

I believe that all children should have the right to an education and a good meal. Donating towards this charity is effectively investing in the future leaders of the world’s poorest countries. The Mary’s Meals Campaign is hugely successful and there has been a recordable increase in school attendance and in average grades in all the schools that the project starts working in.

This charity hit the headlines in 2011 when a girl called Martha Payne created a blog called NeverSeconds about her school meals. Her aim was to raise enough to buy a kitchen for Mary’s Meals (£7,000). Her local Council tried to stop her taking pictures of her school food, which resulted in worldwide media coverage which brought millions of new visitors to her blog. At the last update she had raised over £131,000 and has had over 10 million hits to her blog. She was able to go out to Malawi to open the Mary’s Meals kitchen which had been named after her. It just goes to show what an amazing impact a nine year old girl can have on the world.

Make a Wish Foundation

Make a Wish Foundation has been granting magical wishes to children and young people fighting life threatening conditions since 1986. The wishes, for example a trip to Disneyland, can bring so much joy to a child’s life, providing memories that last a lifetime. Every child and family going through something so difficult really deserves a light at the end of the tunnel. The photos on the website of the happy children achieving their wish are truly magical.

I think this is a fantastic cause and in order to support this charity, I am taking part in a Spartan Race on the 19 September. The Spartan Race involves running through a series of obstacles, ranging over a variety of distances. The race I am taking part is is 5km with 15 obstacles, which include fire, mud, monkey bars etc. I have looked at a three minute youtube video and all I can say is that it looks like a challenging event but I am looking forward to being challenged, especially for such a great cause.
