Why Everyone Should Set Themselves A Challenge

You cannot build a better life for yourself by setting easily attainable goals. You have to challenge yourself to be better, work harder and think bigger

What is a challenge?

A challenge is setting yourself a goal that requires you to bring your “A game”. It isn’t going to be easy but you will get to test your skills as you push yourself harder than you ever thought was possible to achieve that goal.

What does setting yourself a challenge require?

Motivation, action, persistence and commitment!

The benefits of setting yourself a challenge

  • You will accomplish and achieve things that perhaps you never thought were possible.
  • Challenging yourself more will reveal qualities in you that you didn’t know you had.
  • Successful people always go for the next challenge, raising the bar higher than the one before.

What could you achieve if you set yourself a challenge?

  • Complete a marathon
  • Set up your own business
  • Start a blog
  • Travel the world
  • Buy your first property
  • Raise money for charity
  • Learn a new language

There is no challenge more challenging than the challenge to improve yourself

Example of a challenge: Complete a marathon

If I wanted to set myself a challenge to run the London Marathon, from a complete beginner stage, these are the steps I would take:

  • Apply through a charity;
  • Download a marathon training guide/ app/ plan for beginners;
  • Buy a good pair of trainers from a specialised running store who analyse your running style and help you to select the perfect trainers;
  • Start by running and walking in training, for example, one minute running followed by two minutes walking;
  • Plan out the mileage I would have to doing during each month. For example, by February, I would need to be able to run a half marathon;
  • Book to do a half marathon in February, for example, the Brighton half marathon;
  • Book to do a 20 mile race in March, for example, the Surrey Spitfire;
  • Stick to my training plan, however, be flexible as some weeks will be more successful than others;
  • Train with a buddy at least once a week, this will help with motivation as you won’t want to let each other down;
  • Run home from work, or run part of the way on a regular basis;
  • Join a running club;
  • Complete long runs at weekends;
  • Reward yourself at each stage of your achievement, for example, the first time you run 10 miles, have a celebration as it is a huge achievement; and
  • Pick motivating music! The Eye of the Tiger springs to mind.

By the time it gets to the date of the marathon “challenge”, all the hard work has already been done. Then you just enjoy the day and feel that fantastic feeling of setting yourself a challenge and achieving it.

If you don’t challenge yourself, you will never realise what you can become
