5 top tips for effective goal setting
- Set goals that motivate you: You are much more likely to work towards and achieve goals that you are motivated by. If you are not motivated, you will quickly find ways to avoid completing any work towards your goal.
- Write your goals down: This makes your goals more real. You are actually putting it out there into the universe that this is the goal you want to achieve. I would also recommend creating a vision board. This is a visual representation of your goals. You then put this up where you will see it on a daily basis and it will act as a constant reminder of what you are working towards.
- Goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely.
1. Specific: A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. E.g I would like to lose 5kg by the 15th
2. Measurable: When you measure your progress, it helps you to stay on track.
3. Achievable: Is the goal reasonable enough to be accomplished?
4. Relevant: Is reaching the goals you have selected relevant to you and where you want to be in your life?
5. Timely: Always put a time frame around your goal. This involves detailing the date you want to achieve your goal by. This will make it easier to measure whether you have achieved your goal or not. - Create an action plan for each of your goals. This gives you the opportunity to break a big goal down into smaller more manageable and achievable steps. Each step towards your goal can be ticked off along your journey. Progress is progress.
- Review your progress against your goals on a regular basis. If you need to make changes to your actions then do this, but keep chipping away at your to do list.
A dream becomes a goal when action is taken toward its achievement
